The Worst Witch, Jill Murphy

Now these really are modern classics. I loved them as a child and both of my girls have enjoyed them when they first read and listened to them at about 6.  My youngest has just reread them all as a really easy read, reminded of them by the new CBBC series (which is actually a lot of fun). The concept is an attractive one – let’s just say there is nothing more appealing than a school where they teach magic…

“The Worst Witch books are a series of unfortunate events for Mildred Hubble and her friend Maud Spellbody. In each book there is a different problem and when she tries to hide it her scary teacher always manages to find out through her evil enemy Ethel.

These books make me want to read more because I love the idea of Miss Cackle’s Academy for Witches as there isn’t magic in the real world.

My favourite book in the series is The Worst Witch and the Wishing Star because they achieve something unbelievable just because of a shooting star.”
